Kevyn Aucoin Beauty’s latest addition to the line is a tri-phase beauty oil. This particular oil caught my attention not only because of it’s chic appearance but because it is the first of its type oil that the brand has launched. Upon seeing this in spaceNK, i knew I had to have it. I personally admire Kevyn’s work and if you are a makeup artistry junkie, I recommend reading his books and watching his documentary to know a little more about him and his life’s work. Kevyn Aucoin was a legend in the makeup industry and launched his own cosmetic line a year before he died. All things Kevyn Aucoin, are cult beauty classics and are known to be of best quality. Thus, I had to give this oil a try.
What exactly is a beauty oil and how it can be used for?
A beauty oil is a concentrated oil that penetrates the skin in the deeper layers and nourishes it with the different types of ingredients it contains. It can be used as an oil, as a primer or to mix with any foundation, tinted moisturiser, BB and CC cream to make it more sheer. It mimics the effect of an actual highlighter, and it will leave the skin glowing. Think of it as a liquid illuminator that can be used it on its own; added to liquid and stick foundations or even with other liquid highlighters. It will leave the skin with a smooth and glowy result.
It can be used for both the face and body but due to its price, let’s keep it only for the face!
Kevyn Aucoin’s beauty oil in particular also has ingredients that help the skin by making it smoother and softer.
What does tri-phase mean?
Tri phase means that the oil consists of three phases. Imagine each phase as a layer of oil stacked on top of each other. This happens because all of the oils that are in this bottle are of different consistencies and molecular weight. When mixed together though, these oils give you the desired results. An important step that is essential and not to be missed, is after mixing it, it must be shaken extremely well. Then it'll be ready to use. The oils will separate quite quickly even inside the dropper so be quick!
The product lasts for quite a long time because only a couple of drops are needed for each application - depending on the skin type. We recommend two to maximum three drops with dryer skin types and one drop for oily. You have to try it out and see how many drops work for your specific skin type.
How I can use this oil?
1. As a primer oil.
After your moisturizer and before using primer and foundation. Using it as a primer will help hydrate your skin and keep the hydration locked throughout the day.
2. Mix it with your foundation
Mix it with makeup, BB cream, CC cream, highlighter, anything liquid that you can apply on your face. You know my love for sheer foundations! This is especially good for mature skin because it will help your foundation stay crease-free!
3. On top of your makeup - To give that extra editorial glow.
Take a brush or your fingers and apply where you would apply highlighter for that dewy finish!
Does it have a scent?
It has a nice and discrete scent to it - but you know our opinion about products for the face that contain fragrance. We would prefer if it did not.
What if I apply more than I want to?
We’ve all done that too. More is more when using highlighters but for this one let’s keep it to a couple of drops. Less is more and in case you apply extra, you can always blot it with a tissue or a beauty blender.
Does it feel oily when applied on the face?
No, not at all. It leaves you with a fresh looking glow. The consistency of the oil is quite thin - when mixing it on the back of your hand try to keep it steady because it will drop. Also, it will make the wear of your foundation more comfortable on the face and it is long lasting. It leaves you with a non-greasy residue and works well on every skin type - I would recommend heavy oily skin types to avoid this.
We want to help you achieve that dewy / glass skin and this is a product that will take your makeup game to the next level. It is on the expensive side; there are a lot more products and especially beauty oils out there that are more expensive than this one. It's definitely worth the hype.
Any particular application methods?
Apply it with hands, your normal foundation or stippling brush. Don’t use a beauty blender as it will absorb most of the product. A nice trick is to apply your foundation as usual and if you don’t have the time to mix it, put a couple of drops directly on a synthetic foundation brush! Your makeup and contour application will be on point for the rest of the day. Don’t forget that you can use a beautyblender to remove any excess oil at the end. It nourishes and softens the skin and blends really well with Kevyn Aucoin’s, The Celestial Skin Liquid Lighting Highlighter and The Sensual Skin Enhancer . Have that in mind!
Something to remember, when mixing it with foundation, and have combo/oily skin, don’t forget to set with powder around the nose, on the chin and on the forehead. Leave the high points of your cheeks and your forehead to glow.
The only issue I have with this product is the cap. I used it a couple of times and it broke. I completely removed the cap from the product as it is a pain to use and I left the top of the silicon dropper on. You always have to make sure that you’ve secured the cap - otherwise you will spill this precious oil everywhere.
It does worth the hype and it’s EQ approved, paraben-free and dermatologist tested.
Foundation Trick - Mix it with your foundations, creams and highlighters. It is a game changer!
Setting this with Hourglass Ambient powder palette will leave your face editorial ready. (Try to set it with other finely milled highlighters too!)
If you are in a hurry, just apply a couple of drops on a synthetic brush and blend your foundation as usual.
